Thomond Park: central to Limerick's European City of Sport (2011) festivities |
In Limerick, unlike most cities, certainly most Irish cities, this is a city where sport where the 'doctor and docker' compete in the field of sport on an equal footing and where sport transcends all boundaries.
2010 was a great sporting year for Limerick and 2011 as a European City of Sport Limerick will build further on this foundation. Sporting highlights such as the Heineken Cup Quarter Finals, the first ever Great Limerick Run, the JP McManus Golf Pro Am, the Australian Rules Series in the Gaelic Grounds, the Sunderland AFC v Munster Selection, Willie Casey’s European title fight, the new Greyhound stadium and perhaps most of all the Special Olympic Ireland Games at the University of Limerick, which captivated the minds and hearts of every person in Limerick and throughout the country.
During 2011 there will be an exciting calendar of events and the city will be alive to the passion and excite ment of a full year’s sporting festival. There will also be a focus on promoting Limerick as a strong sporting destination, a centre for sporting conferences, sports research and also to ensure that sport is promoted to all. At the end of the year it is hoped there will be a lasting sporting legacy that will survive well into the future ensuring the continued growth of both City and County.
Here is an interview with Eoin Prendergast, Head of Shanon Development; who played a key role in bringing the "European City of Sport 2011" to Limerick:
